Larry Beisler Strange Bird on a Cheeseboard August 3 - September 15 2018 opening reception with the artist Friday August 3, 6 - 9 pm artist statement I believe that my love and desire to carve engages my conscious with my subconscious in a physical way that I really can’t explain. When I start carving a new stone I don’t usually have a subject or image in mind. Sometimes the stone doesn’t connect with me in the beginning so I put it aside and work on something else. I am conscious of its presence in the studio and I put it in the back of my mind. Either through my conscious imagination or by way of my dreams the image or idea will start to emerge. The sculptures that emerge from my conscious imagination do so slowly. But the pieces that emerge from my subconscious happen very quickly, sometimes in one carving session, which amazes me when it happens. My dreams are like epic adventures in full color. When I wake I feel as if I was an actual participant; not an observer. I once told a friend that interprets dreams about a dream I’ve had since childhood and still have today. She said it is the most creative dream anybody can have. Every time it happens it is awesome, and it seems as if I can call it up at will in certain dream situations. When I call it up and take off with it, I never want it to end; but I always wake up and it’s the real world again. Can you guess what my dream is about? |
